Now Is The Time To Buy Six Feet Under And Big Love

Two HBO box-sets are Amazon’s current Gold Box Deal of the Day, both reduced by more than 50%.

The DVD box-set of Six Feet Under is currently $54.49, 64% off it’s list price of $150.92.*

I was a big fan of the first two seasons of Six Feet Under – some of the writing was particularly excellent – and though my interest waned and I didn’t see the final season I certainly want to return to it at some point to rewatch the series and finally finish it.

Also on sale is the DVD box-set of Big Love, which is currently $84.99, 57% off the list price of $199.95.*

I never actually saw Big Love but I am keen to check it out at some point, based mostly on the excellent cast that Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer managed to assemble.

Both deals are for today only so if you want to pick them up then you best hurry.

*Neither series is available on Blu-ray.

Evil Dead Remake Writer And Director No Longer Involved In The Sequel

The Evil Dead remake was very successful at the box office – with a worldwide gross of almost $100 million from a reported budget of $17 million – and work on a sequel was actually underway before that money even started rolling in.

Writer/Director Fede Alvarez and writer Rodo Sayagues were working on the screenplay for the sequel but Sayagues has just confirmed, in an interview with Gorosito TV via DesdeHollywood, that the two are no longer involved at all.

Sam Raimi is working on the script for Army of Darkness 2 though, so a new Evil Dead film of some kind in the near future seems very likely.

The pair have a number of other projects lined up though, including a Dante’s Inferno film based on the video game and the book, Machina, an original horror film and a couple of other ideas that may come to something.

Watch the interview from Gorosito TV below for more on what Sayagues had to say about their upcoming features.

Poster And Trailer For Seduced And Abandoned

Seduced and Abandoned, a new documentary on modern filmmaking by James Toback and Alec Baldwin, will play in UK cinemas from the 8th of November but will premiere on HBO tomorrow. It’s a strange pattern that we’ve seen before, with Behind the Candelabra for instance.

Above is the UK poster for the film and below is the HBO trailer. The steps, in case you’re not familiar with them, are the steps up to the Grand Théâtre Lumière in Cannes, the setting for Seduced and Abandoned.

I saw it in Cannes and at the time I said,

A very fun doc if you’re interested in the subject but formally infuriating. Tons of superb anecdotes.

Weekend Viewing: Peter Falk And Gena Rowlands Discuss One Of The Greatest Films Ever Made

Last year I was asked to contribute a top ten of the greatest films ever made and included on my list was John Cassavetes’ A Woman Under the Influence. It is a truly remarkable film and contains one of the greatest and most heart-breaking performances in cinematic history from Gena Rowlands.

To coincide with the release of their new Cassavetes collection on Blu-ray, The Criterion Collection have posted a video of Peter Falk and Gena Rowland discussing the film.

Now, if you haven’t seen it before, I urge you to see A Woman Under the Influence.

New The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Promo Gets You Ready For A Revolution

This new promo for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire really sells the part of the books that made me such a fan of them.

There’s a real push and pull in Catching Fire between what Katniss wants to do and what she can do that gives the story its dramatic drive. I’m very much looking forward to seeing that play out in the film, and where it goes in the next two.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens in the UK on the 21st of November and in America one day later.

Weekend Viewing: 12 Years A Slave Director Featurette

12 Years a Slave is a remarkable feature and Steve McQueen’s best film to date.

The director started out as a video artist before moving into filmmaking in 2008 with Hunger and then followed that up with Shame in 2011 and now 12 Years a Slave. It’s an impressive run of films and I very much look forward to seeing what he does next.

A new featurette was released this week for 12 Years a Slave and it focuses squarely on the director.

Arrow Announce Their Q1 2014 Releases, Including Phantom Of The Paradise And The Stuff

UK label Arrow Video announced new titles this week for January, February and March 2014 and they are another great and varied selection of films.

I’m particularly looking forward to their release of Teruo Ishii’s Blind Woman’s Curse. It’s a fantastic phantasmagorical feature from the director and has another fine performance from the wonderful Meiko Kaji. Also catching my eye and sending me to Amazon are Pit Stop, Phantom of the Paradise and The Stuff. But in all honesty I pretty much want them all.

Below is the list in full, with links to pre-order them, and below that you’ll find a selection of the artwork for the releases.

Watch: Trailer And Two Clips From James Gray’s The Immigrant

James Gray’s The Immigrant will be released in France in November but there’s still no word of a release date for America or the UK. The Weinsteins dragging their heels again it seems…

The film is a rich and handsome drama and I look forward to seeing again. Hopefully on a big screen as part of its wide release.

Here’s a new trailer and two clips from the film, featuring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix and some brief NSFW nudity.

New Poster To Celebrate A Special Screening Of Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat

I watched Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat last Halloween and the Halloween before that. And I’ll probably be watching it again this year if I have the time. It’s a tradition I’ll happily keep up for many years.

It’s a highly entertaining film and I’ve introduced it to a number of people who have all enjoyed it a great deal. If you’ve never seen it, you really should.

There will be a special theatrical screening of the film this week and Legendary have commissioned a poster for the film to give away to those that attend. You can find out more on their Facebook page and check out the poster below.
