Supergirl: “Red Faced” Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

“Red Faced” is not only a vast improvement over last week’s misfire, but also the best episode of Supergirl to date. It manages to tackle important questions and put Kara front and center in a way that forces her to grow, while also giving us some great Cat Grant moments and making headway on the series’ lingering mysteries.

Melissa Benoist has been the high point of every episode thus far, and while that certainly doesn’t change here, it was a relief to see her get to add a new layer to Supergirl. Kara dealing with the disparity between her lowly secret identity and being the Girl of Steel is a staple of the Super-mythology, but “Red Faced” proved to be a turning point. The underpinnings of the episode were a huge step forward in terms of letting Kara deal with her deeper issues. Or, as Cat puts it, “the anger behind the anger.”

Adam Hughes’ Homage To Alphonse Mucha

Some of our favorite comic artists do work we’ll never see. Private commissions happen all the time and some of the most gorgeous art ends up only being seen by a handful of people… unless the artist is nice enough to post the piece to their social media… or in this case, their wife does.

Allison Sohn is the wife of Adam Hughes (and an artist in her own right) and yesterday she posted this image on facebook showing off a gorgeous 4-part commission that Hughes had recently done.

I’m a huge fan of my own husband’s work- that goes without saying. But sometimes he does something that really stands out for me. This was a set of four commissioned pieces, requested to look like Alphonse Mucha’s The Four Seasons. Done in color Copic Marker with colored pencils and a little paint and ink.

Below Hughes’ commission I’ve posted Mucha’s Seasons, showing that the new pieces are a fitting homage within the theme.

Free On Bleeding Cool – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White And The Little Mermaid Are Damsels

If you’re home and just recovering from Black Friday and Cyber Monday… here is a free comic for you to read. It’s Damsels #1 by Leah Moore, John Reppion and Aneke from Dynamite Entertainment.

Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Snow White come together with other damsels in a new adventure filled with danger and intrigue. In Damsels, the alluring princesses of classic fairy tales take up arms to save their kingdoms from war. Rediscover the darkness at the heart of fairy tales and why they’ll be no happily ever after. Damsels opens with Rapa wishing she had not got out of bed that morning, if she had a bed to get out of that is. The day began badly and has gone rapidly and literally downhill ever since. A series of peculiar and baffling encounters throw obstacle after obstacle into her path, intent it’seems on preventing her progress. The thing is, until today she had no idea she was trying to make any progress, toward anything! A collection of hazy memories and bewildering tattoos are all she has to help her figure it all out, and to be honest, she’d just as soon not bother. Around her, we see the mountain city of Caumont thrown into overdrive by the arrival of Queen Talia and King Aurore of Perrault. The streets are thronged with cheering people, does it matter they aren’t exactly sure why they are cheering, or for whom?

The Damsels series is part of the Dynamite digital comic bundle over at Groupees.com.

Marvel’s Secret Wars Delayed (Again)

Marvel's Secret Wars has been delayed once again.

The series was originally planned at eight issues ending in October, but the creators added a ninth to fit in the "cataclysmic" ending. Today, Diamond Comics Distribution has announced that the ninth issue will be delayed.

Initially said to be released in December, Secret Wars #8 will be taking that spot, with Secret Wars #9 moving to January 6, 2016.

With Secret Wars, the Marvel Universe ends and Battleworld takes its place. The series is part of a massive storyline spanning much of Marvel's work, and something that Jonathan Hickman has been building up to for years.
