IGN Assemble! #52 – The One Looking Back on 52

We've hyped it for a while, but it's finally arrived! In this very special retrospective episode, we take a look back at DC's remarkable follow-up series to Infinite Crisis, 52.

Written by Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, and Grant Morrison, it was a weekly series that focused on B and C-list characters that filled in a year of missing time after the DCU books jumped "One Year Later" in the aftermath of the crisis.

We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming next week, but we hope you'll join us for this trip down memory lane. 52! 52! 52!

There are spoilers within for everything we talk about, so beware.

The Best and Worst Movies of Summer 2012

Was the Summer of Awesome as awesome as we had hoped? Check out our scorecard for the movies released this past season. They're ranked by our critics' review ratings, from the worst to the best. Chime in on the Comments with your picks for the best and worst movies of Summer 2012.

Review score: 3/10. Simply put, it’s not scary at all. It’s a horror movie that does nothing original and doesn’t even manage to scare you in the process.  If you enjoy laughing at bad movies with friends, then sure, have a good time watching it. -- @GreggKatzman

Preview: Swamp Thing #0 Brings Back Arcane… But When?

Here you go folks. As promised, the opening scene of Swamp Thing #0, with the return of Anton Arcane, the Very Big Bad of Swamp Thing whose shadow has always been felt over the book courtesy of DC’s BFF BuzzFeed. And it looks like its a shadow that may have been cast a lot longer ago…

Hero Worship: One Nation, Under S.H.I.E.L.D.

I’ll start by saying that I’m 100% behind the Marvel/Joss Whedon S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. I think it’s a spectacular idea and a great way to introduce less mainstream characters into the cinematic universe and more importantly, to audiences that don’t read comic books. S.H.I.E.L.D. stands as a great tool for giving fans that only know the Marvel Universe on screen a chance to assimilate to characters like Mockingbird, Jimmy Woo, or Jessica Drew. This is very exciting to me.

But there is a concern here, too. Like flying too close to the sun or something. I speculated a while back about life after The Avengers, suggesting that TV would be Marvel’s best bet for expansion. While that remains true, seeing the plans for Phase 2 and Marvel’s exclusive contract with Joss Whedon, it feels like Marvel is once again putting all of its eggs in one basket.

First Image Of Chris Pine In Tom Clancy-Based Thriller Jack Ryan

Paramount’s new Jack Ryan adventure may not be out until the end of next year, but we’re already being teased with the first image of Chris Pine as the eponymous character. We’re not sure where he’s going in this photo, but he seems quite annoyed about it.

Pine is the fourth actor to star in the iconic role, preceded by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt For Red October) Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum Of All Fears), but director Kenneth Branagh and screenwriters Adam Cozad, David Koepp and Anthony Peckham are going off-script as this will be the first Jack Ryan film not based on any of the novels. It will focus on Jack Ryan’s move from the Marine Corps to a position as a financial advisor on Wall Street – a career move which takes an unpleasant turn after he finds himself framed for a terrorist plot to ruin the US economy.

As this new still from Coming Soon reveals, Jack Ryan knows how to go on the run in style. The motorcycle that Pine is riding is a Ducati Diavel Carbon, which sells for around $20,000 and is ideal for fleeing terrorists, government agencies, and Kenneth Branagh. I’m not being paid by Ducati to tell you this, but if any of their reps want to send me a free motorbike then I won’t turn it down. I’d like one in Hot Pink.

Who Is ‘Green Lantern’s’ The First Lantern?

In the pages of the recently released "Green Lantern Annual" #1 fans were teased with the reveal of an imprisoned new Lantern called The First Lantern...well he's the FIRST maybe he's not new new...but ya know.

The introduction of this mysterious and obviously pivotal character will kick off the upcoming "Rise of the Third Army" crossover event that'll rumble the pages of DC's "Lantern" books; "Green Lantern, "Green Lantern Corps," "Green Lantern: New Guardians" and "Red Lanterns." Said writer Geoff Johns on the matter:

Who the First Lantern is and what his role will be in the upcoming Green Lantern universe will come into play very, very quickly... Whether he's friend or foe will be up for debate, but regardless he is one of the potentially most dangerous beings in existence.

In his review of "Green Lantern Annual" #1, our blogger Alex Zalben said:

...this issue is probably the most important annual hitting this week to the overall fabric of the DC Universe.

Adding that it...

...folds in even more wrinkles into Johns’ already expansive GL mythology...

We'll have to see how this plays out. What do you guys think?

Behold: The NES Toaster!

A very resourceful Deviant Artist by the name of MyBurningEyes designed a digital 3D image of this awesome old school NES fashioned into a toaster. Pretty great, eh?

This kinda sorta needs to be real and on sale ASAP, am I right?

Somebody's gotta get on this.

Jill Harness over at the fantastic Neatorama, where I found this beauty, made a very good point in her post saying: you have to blow on the toast a few times before popping them in to get it to work?

Excellent question, Jill.
